Dr Andreas Papatheodorou was born in Athens, Greece in 1974. He is Associate Professor in Industrial and Spatial Economics with Emphasis on Tourism at the Department of Business Administration, University of the Aegean, Chios, Greece. He also holds appointments as an Adjunct at the National School of Public Administration, Greece and the Hellenic Open University, Greece. He has also served as an External Examiner at Cranfield University (MSc Programme in Air Transport Management) and University of Hertfordshire (BA Programmes in Business Administration, Tourism Management, joint degrees). Dr Papatheodorou commenced his academic career as a Lecturer in Tourism (permanent position) at the School of Management, University of Surrey, UK in year 2000. He stayed there until 2005 and subsequently became a Visiting Senior Fellow until 2008. Between 2005 and 2010, Andreas also served as an Honorary Research Fellow of the Tourism and Travel Research Institute at the Nottingham Business School, UK. In the past, Dr Papatheodorou was an Assistant Professor at the University of the Aegean (2005-11) and also held adjunct appointments at the Athens University of Economics and Business and Harokopeion University in Greece.
In terms of academic qualifications, Dr Papatheodorou holds a four-year BSc degree in International and European Economic Studies from the Athens University of Economics and Business, Greece where he ranked first not only in the Panhellenic Entry Examinations but also throughout his academic studies as well as at the time of his graduation, having achieved an average of 9.44/10. Moreover, he holds a two-year Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Economics from the University of Oxford, UK (with specialisation in industrial organisation and international economics); and a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) degree in Geography again from the University of Oxford (Dissertation Title: Evolutionary Patterns in Tourism: A Spatial Industrial Organisation Approach). Andreas became a Fellow of the British Higher Education Academy (HEA) following attendance and successful completion of a three-year (2000-03) seminar on teaching and learning in Higher Education at the University of Surrey. Dr Papatheodorou is also a Fellow of the UK Tourism Society, the forum of tourism professionals in Britain, and a member of the German Aviation Research Society (GARS) and the international Air Transport Research Society (ATRS). In 2009 he was recognized as an Emerging Scholar of Distinction by the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. He speaks four languages (Greek, English, French and German) and has graduated with excellence in classical guitar from the Greek National Conservatory.
Dr Papatheodorou is a prolific academic researcher in areas related to air transport and tourism economics and geography. He has published 19 papers in international refereed academic journals, 4 academic books, 22 book chapters in edited volumes and 16 book reviews (in academic and professional journals); moreover, he has undertaken 16 academic studies (including dissertations) and presented papers in 42 international conferences and workshops (refereed in their great majority). The academic work of Dr Papatheodorou has received wide recognition at an international level. He has over 220 citations of his work by other scholars in English and two of his papers were declared as the most downloaded in their year of publication by the respective journals (i.e. Annals of Tourism Research, 2001; Journal of Travel Research, 2010). Dr Papatheodorou is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Air Transport Studies and a Resource Editor of Annals of Tourism Research; moreover, he is a member of 3 journal scientific boards, a referee for 16 academic journals and has served as a member of the scientific committee in 14 conferences. He participates in the Panel of Experts of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). He has been invited by many universities around the world to deliver lectures. Dr Papatheodorou is also an active university teacher. Since 2000, he has taught 15 postgraduate and 9 undergraduate modules in 7 universities and has supervised an extensive number of postgraduate and undergraduate dissertations as well as 7 PhD Theses in the UK and Greece (also he has internally or externally examined more than 10 PhD theses in the UK, Greece and Australia). Andreas has also participated as a member of the E.T.E.M. (Laboratory of Tourism Research and Studies - University of the Aegean) or as an external associate (freelancer) in 21 research projects and studies for national and international organizations.
